Structure and Core Functions

The Community Brain Disorders Assessment and Treatment Service is a team comprising of members from various disciplines, including medical, nursing, clinical psychology, neuropsychology and social work.

The team is geographically located at the Royal Talbot Campus of the Austin Health Network , but provides services statewide (Victoria), either direct or via a range of other modalities, including teleconferencing.

The core functions of CBDATS may be summarized as:
  1. Assessment & treatment: responding to requests from a variety of professionals, patients or families who require assistance with assessing a person's emotional, psychiatric or behavioural state in the setting of brain injury.

  2. Secondary consultation: providing advice via telephone, teleconferencing, e-mail and other media to other professionals currently managing patients with brain impairment and psychiatric disturbance.

  3. Service integration: assisting existing services to collaborate more effectively when dealing with challenging cases.

  4. Education: providing structured and informal education on the assessment & management of psychiatric and behavioural aspects of brain impairment , as well as education regarding service delivery models, collaboration between agencies, and on understanding how to integrate the policies of DHS with other existing policy and legislative frameworks, such as the Mental Health and Guardianship Acts .

  5. Internal coordination: acting as the focal point of contact for all requests to other parts of the service (BDU, Step 2), and in monitoring and facilitating the movement of patients within parts of the service or in their discharge planning where appropriate.
Since publication of the Protocols and Issues Papers by DHS in 2004, CBDATS 's role has shifted toward the more traditional "statewide" functions of secondary consultation, service integration and education.

Mission

The programme aims to provide a supportive, flexible and responsive service which is sensitive to the needs of its patients. We provide a high standard of support and consultation within the rehabilitation process, with the view to promoting the brain disordered person's most adaptive level of functioning, ultimately aiming at integration within the community.

Who can use the service?

Individuals aged 16-65 who suffer from brain impairment and psychiatric disturbance and can be referred to the service by themselves, their families, their treating doctor, or other professional or case manager.

In general, it is the preference of CBDATS to work with the client's existing service providers, rather than replace them.
